Fish won and lost!

I was reading the email from Ca Canny this morning and they were talking about a whale longer than the boat surfacing beside them yesterday when Alan was preparing his fishing gear. That reminded me that I had forgotten to deploy our gear at daybreak  so I promptly sent my favourite pink lure over the side.

That was the last I saw of it for a short time later there was a short buzz on the reel and then a pause.  I leapt across the cockpit in true fishing fashion and took the rod to feel what might be there when the line went again. This is typical of billfish attack where they run up and stun the victim before coming back to eat him!  I increased the drag to as much as I dared and it continued to take line.  At one time the pressure eased and then he ran again but not before surfing on the surface a hundred yards from the back of the boat. I didn't dare take the rod from the holder as the pressure was so great. He then ran hard again and the wire trace parted leaving me lureless.  This is the one problem with a Parasailor - you can't heave to to land your fish!  Never mind, we've made excellent progress over the last 24 hours and by this time tomorrow we will have less than 2000 of our alloted 2800 miles to go.

An a more happy note, we caught a 6 inch flying fish this afternoon with the large net we call the trampoline.  Maybe bait for tomorrow!
