Its the middle of the night and time for
reflection. We've had a good day. We had almost 10 hours of smooth sailing
under Parasailor until the sun dipped below the horizon and the wind died.
After a few hours motoring, however, the wind came back and so we find ourselves
again making 7 kt towards Finisterre (the end of the earth according to early
spanish).
AIS - we have this great system called AIS
(Automatic Information System). It basically transmits who we are and
where we are to anyone who can receive the information. Its mandatory on vessels
of 300 tons or more. What it means is that we can see the big ships on AIS
and they can see us. That means they have the opportunity to avoid us and
we have seen this happen several times. That's good - it greatly reduces
the chances of our being run down!
