Day 11,
Amazed how well Skye Blue sails under a staysail and 3
reefs in the main! Actually she amazes us again and again how well she deals
with all the different conditions she meets. She is a good boat. So we take good
care of her. Must feel a bit either like a couple of days off - of frustratingly
slow - for her these last almost two days since we had to take the jib down and
put the staysail up. All though we are not currently going slowly: doing 5-6
knots on what is basically a handkerchief compared to the size of the jib! We
have found a piece of rope that might just do as a replacement furling line.
Will put that on once the conditions improve a bit: not in the mood for a salt
water wash down out on the foredeck right now :D And we are going so well!
And we don't want to disturb the boobies either. Haha,
yes, they are birds and that is what they are actually called. They have been
roosting at night on the pull-pit for the last week at least, but since
yesterday they seem to have moved in during daytime as well! About 20 of them
tried to get access last night - obviously that was never going to happen -
but believe they ended up being able to squeeze together 12 of them by
dark! Well impressed, I was. They have now perfected their technique, landing on
a at time fairly bouncy perch. They normally circle around the boat during the
day as we disturb the flying fish and they eat flying fish so imagine their luck
when we come along with a nice armchair and free fish!
Also we had a bit of sunshine today. Going well, though
a bit towards the north as the winds have a bit more west in them. But we think
we can catch that up later. Stephen studies Jimmy Cornell intensely and
according to him don't go south too soon. Wait till you hit 100 degrees W. We
are currently at 94 degrees W.
Saw the loom of light from two fishing boats last night.
Exciting!
All is well.
