Sensible people don't sail past active volcanoes...

One of the things that made we want to give up work was getting up at 0500 to travel to work. So why didn’t it seem like work when we got up at that hour to sail from Nevis to Guadeloupe?

I was expecting to be hard on the wind the whole way, with only about 12 knots of wind, so for the journey to take up to 14 hours. But although we were motor sailing most of the way we made very good time and were coming into Deshaies to anchor by 1600. Finding a spot was a bit of a problem as it is very crowded here now, but eventually the hook went in near the shore. If the wind comes round we’ll be even closer to the shore….

En route we had to pass Montserrat, which still has an active volcano. Sensible people go down the windward side, so that any dust, gas, or flying boulders for that matter will be avoided. But it didn’t look too bad on the approach so we took a shortcut down the leeward side. Pooo! That’s smelly, lots of bad egg smell and a light covering of volcanic dust. But it was worth it, and we also saw a ring around the sun.
