Today is our last day in Curacao, where they make the blue liquer, the
centre of the three Dutch Antillien Islands. Tomorrow bright and early we leave
for the Venezuelan coast, a 60 mile trip to the anchorage, hopefully we'll get
there before nightfall.
Yesterday we finished our
PADI dive course and passed. So now we can dive and explore a little more of the
undersea world with the aid of scuba tanks. Our instructor Ramon Korving who
runs 'Downtown Diving' in Curacao was very helpful and patient.
We had our first dive in the open water
(they have no swimming pool here) it was excellent although a little nerve
racking. Our second and third dives were on the same day and by the evening we
were worn out. Day 3 we did two more dives, one to run through all the skills we
learned, ie removing your mask underwater while breathing through the regulator
with your nose open. Breathing with an open regulator, removing your
breathing regulator, finding and replacing it (while underwater of
course), emergency ascent and many more. All this interspursed with classroom
questions and a final exam. By the end of the 3rd day you could say we were
knackered, but we passed and we have our PADI dive certificate. This enables us
now to either buy our own or rent a diveshops equipment and dive unaccompanied
to 130 feet, though we'd only do that aftera lot more experience. Over the past
three days we dived to 50-60 feet that was enough to start and
great.
We'd recommend
'Downtown Diving' thorouhly, if you are in Curacao and want to learn to scuba
dive check Ramon out first. Our total cost for the PADI open water course
was 495 guilders about 290US$ each. You can contact Ramon on www.downtowndiving.com 005999
