Sitrep no 2

About 30 miles to the mouth of the Chesapeake, it's been a long tortuous night - very light and fickle winds, slow progress and the fleet looks pretty mixed up - we were looking really well-placed, then really bad, now we're not so sure! A new wind came in at 0600 and we're now tracking at 7 kts, so morale has gone up, helped by the reduction in biting flies and midges.

Ships's battery went flat yesterday afternoon and after much testing and trials we've concluded the alternator has failed. So we're sailing without instruments and no lights at night save for a torch over the stern - hopefully noone of the other yachts figured who was sailing in stealth mode... We have one good battery for engine starting and thats all (plus brief turn-on of PC to look at the weather routing). So there won't be many sitreps!

We should exit the Chesapeake by this afternoon and be out into blue ocean, which will be a bonus.

All the best for now.
