The journey from the San Blas islands to Portobello was only 6 hours in a strong breeze and arrived at a deep, well protected bay called Portobello on the mainland. Francis Drake used the port as a base to pirate Spanish merchantmen and is buried at sea in the bay. The town itself is partly derelict but in its heyday all the gold and silver taken by the Spaniards from South America passed through this port. We joined the Blue Water Rally in Portobello. A group of 30 yachts circumnavigating the world in 20 months. We will go as far as Fiji with them. At the Rally Party we were briefed on the complicated procedures for navigating the Panama Canal.
