Well it's been another bumpy, eventful 24hrs.
Overnight the wind was up to its usual tricks of being fickle. Although
the overall wave height has dropped, the sea state remains very choppy making
life on board pretty uncomfortable which is tiring us all out mentally
and physically as our bodies struggle to adjust to the new status
quo. One of the more challenging tasks is
cooking, leaving whoever is on designated mother duty that day the
difficult task of cooking for crew with
questionable appetite whilst leaning at 45 degrees. Climbing over sleeping
crew in the saloon berths while trying to find things is also pretty
challenging. Chicken broth soup is proving to be popular so far - you can heat
it in a pan quickly and it is generally more forgiving when you are throwing it
up 3 hours later.
The lack of larger, more consistent waves also
means that we're unable to surf, leaving Little Pea only able to drive
forward on wind power alone. As dawn broke the wind teased Little Pea,
prompting the crew to prepare for several sail changes that never materialised
due to the wind abruptly switching to a different direction. By the late
morning, the breeze had settled in a good direction, and we're are now back on
our way towards our next planned waypoint.
We have managed to avoid anyc major breakages so
far, although we have discovered we are leaking diesel fuel into the
bilge which is pretty unpleasant. A clean up job for tomorrow...
For those of you who weren't following us in 2012,
we thought we'd give you a little intro to Little Pea: She is a Southerly 38 and was launched back in February 2009.
She's a spacious, British built beauty that certainly stands out amongst
yachts of a similar size. What makes a Southerly unique to many other brands of
yacht is their ability to lift their keel. This means that she can sail into
places much shallower than other monohulls, making them ideal boats for cruising
in the Baltic, Bahamas, and further afield. Although Southerly's are not
traditionally racing boats, Little Pea is equipped with an extensive sail loft
enabling her to take advantage of many wind speeds and directions.
