It was all going so well...

Yesterday initally felt like a dream trip across Biscay: As the wind started to lightly fill from the North East, our G1 pushed us along at a modest 6kts. There'd been a yacht chasing us down the bay for a couple of days now and we were proud they they weren't making any ground, even though they look bigger than us. However, disaster struck at sunset when in only 9kts of breeze the Spini halyard snapped sending the G1 into the drink. We managed to recover the sail pretty quickly with out any further damage and unfurled our Genoa as a substitute sail. Over night the wind (as predicted) built to a steady 16kts propelling us over 8kts over the ground. This meant, even though our rival yacht kept their spiniker flying, they were unable to make sufficient enough speed to pass us in the dark. As I type, we are still under main and genoa and hurtling down towards Cape Finisterre whilst our rivals our about half a mile behind are struggling under the building conditions to keep their yacht under control with so much sail up. We're expecting this evening to be quite breezy as it looks like we have textbook conditions to activate the Finisterre acceleration zone. We might be in for a bumpy ride!
