Sun 17 Jan 2010 18:30

Yacht Club Micalvi, south side of the World.  Puerto Williams

Five o’clock perfect arrival off Puerto Williams, fourteen thousand nautical miles on the log.  Chilean Armada Navy base, aerials and watch towers, a pair of PSG ships parked side by side on the Navy Pier. The cruise ship anchorage bouys both empty. Sail yacht Hollinsclough came to alongside Navy patrol vessel PS16. Took breath and called for permission to the channel of the yacht club. An old munitions ship lay in the mud, its name Micalvi. Tied alongside, a rusting 1920 timber frame for a new home hosting a dozen yachts.

The Micalvi yacht club bar opens at nine, fifty four south  for south of the World travellers to meet and great. Austrians, French, Dutch, Chilean and three Falkland school teachers, Cathy, Jane and Pamela.

Sunday service at the Navy church, officers in best royal blue, diesel will have to wait to Monday morning but ice cream, fresh bread and pizza in a shop at the plaza. Astonishingly warm with grey mountains snow capped in the distance.
