Anchorage Abato Island

Through Canal Chacao race all speed with five knots of tide push, darkness and no moon for a blind eye, needing all technology to arrive in the narrow channel on the radar and plotter to drop the anchor in the beautiful and protected bay of Abtao. Silence, stillness and without moon in the cloud a darkness darker than a tin of matt black blackboard paint.

Morning surprise to find no start on the engine. No diesel on the injectors, a day of fuel bleed and then a call to the Chilean Armada. A clipper, Caucau arrived by sunrise next and the fault was the high pressure pump. Withdrawn from the engine and despatched all speed to engineers in Puerto Montt for repair. Lazy days of sunshine in the flat water of the crystal clear bay, home to fishermen and silence of nature in the evening tree line glory of early southern hemisphere summer.
