S/V Galatea update

Hi all,

After a pleasant few days at anchorages south of Nost Be, we reached The port city of Mahajanga on Sunday evening. As we had already checked out from Madagascar back in Nosy Be we decided to not go ashore. We didn't really need anything, so had dinner on the boat - Spanish Mackerel caught by Wally earlier in the day. It was too windy to bbq, so wally sautéed it on the stove. Tasty.

The place is typical of less well to do countries. Reminded me of some of the tired looking port towns in Flores, Indonesia, including freighter ships lying capsized and sunk at the main wharf.

We departed from Mahajanga yesterday morning for the start of the crossing to Richards bay. We have decided to keep on running southwards along the Madagascan west coast to about 20 degrees south. We are at about 16.5 degrees south now - so another 200 miles or one and a half days.

Come thursday morning we will look to head SW out from Madagascar, heading towards Maputo, Mozambique, at about 26 degrees south. Our weather prognosticators/routing experts reckon we should have a relatively low pressure system free week or so. Just what we need for crossing and running down the much feared Aghullas current.

We hope to get into Richards bay next Tuesday, all going well.

Hope to provide an update en route.

Otherwise all well on Galatea.

Neil, wally and ben
