When we hit 9.8 knots over the ground we decided it was time to get the spinnaker down. The sailmakers' work in Las Palmas was well worth it, and the snuffer doused the sail very easily despite around 20 knots of wind. We're still heading about 230 degrees, which should take us clear of the worst of the nasty weather that is apparently on its way.

In the meantime we've unfurled the bimini - homemade on Saturday, just hours before the race got under way. Our French neighbours on Wanako somewhat uncharitably described it as a 'genoa belge' - a Belgian genoa. We felt this could have been partly due to envy, particularly in view of their own 'genoa belge' rigged off the furled gib to stop the spinnaker from getting wrapped around it - a sort of cats cradle of lines.

Anyway, Belgian or otherwise, the device is affording good shade in the cockpit and giving Summer Song a jaunty air as she ploughs on at about 6 knots.
