We have now motored some 20 miles to an isolated group of small islands and anchored in a narrow fjord near a deserted village which we explored yesterday afternoon. We saw some amazing bergs on the way. We are at the exit of Disko bay and at its head is a glacier that calves ice bergs at a prolific rate so the bay is renown for the number seen. This morning we were awoken by a thump on the hull as a small lump the size of a bathtub passed by (the big ones can't get to us as we are anchored in shallow water and they ground out on the bottom before they can be an issue)
The girls were on deck first(faster reactions for sure!)and not dressed in much more than undies so the lump was given a short order shove with boat hooks and headed down current.... the girls headed down below to the heater even faster!
It is foggy so as the visibility means these small lumps (called growlers as as they melt the air bubbles trapped in the ice fizz and growl as they are released, its a fabulous sound)are hard to spot ( and don't show on radar) so we have decided to stay where we are. Tom is doing maintenance, Nancy is painting and Trish is downloading photos taken yesterday for the book she is doing. I think its time for coffee so that's what I will go and get for the workers. Before I sign off though I would just like to say that Trish and I have met so many people, that Tom and Nancy know from previous trips, who have been so generous and helpful for which a huge thank you. Also to Tom and Nancy's family and friends who kept us in the picture over Hurricane Arthur via emails. Its been great to know that our safety and well being have been in peoples minds. We wouldn't be having such a good time without your kindnesses for sure.
