On to La Coruna

Yanmar has done most of the work on this trip. The Torre de Hercules stood
out for miles as we approached along the coast from the west.
Rounding the Dique de Abrigo, we berthed in the Darsena Deportiva, which is
very close to the city, but still quite peaceful. This marina is part of an
association of Galician marinas streching from Bayona to Viveiro. It appears
that you can get a 'passporte' from them for 5euro which entitles to
discounts
at each of the participating marinas, like the transeurope arrangement.
There
is a lot of marina development going on in La Coruna, with the one at Marina
Coruna by the Dique de Abrigo being enlarged considerably. It does seem that
wherever we go, the
Galicians are gearing up for a big increase in yachting activity.
We are very taken by La Coruna. It has a splendid setting at the entrance to
the Ria. The old part of the city, which is closest to the marinas, has
spacious
and elegant plazas and park areas, some really impressive historical
buildings, with the
main area of narrow streets being pedestrianised and full of attractive
shops and restuarents. Having spent 4 weeks in small harbours and the Rias,
it has come as quite a culture shock to us. And next to the old is a
bustling modern commercial area and port.
