Hello everyone!
well its my blog today, i always get a little
nervous, afterall how can i live up to the standard set by Pablo? All these
interesting stories and opinions, i feel such an idiot writing about what its
actually like out here rowing an ocean. Suprisingly there are similarities
between the 2 of us:
we are both male
we are both on this boat
hmmmm............ a little help here
people!
we both live in bristol....does that
count??
well we are both determined to make it to antigua
and gain as much publicity for bristol zoo as possible, surely thats good
enough.
niall told me that we are actually following the
same route as christopher columbus when he discovered america, apparently he was
looking for india though. why didnt he just use an atlas or globe like everyone
else?? i was sure abraham lincoln discovered america but apparently he just
owned it. you learn something new everyday.
as diego mentioned briefly we now have a fish
which lives under our boat, he called it dory but shes called dora! i saw her
first so i can name her!! well she has now been with us for about a week, we are
unsure why she is with us, maybe she is a spy sent by ocean summit and shes
drilling holes in the bottom, maybe she is hoping to reach the uk and seek
asylum (just ask gordon brown, he'll fly you over first class and give you
a nice house), my assumption is she saw niall rowing by and thought he was
one of the mario brothers. Dora seems to have a bit of a temper and has chased
of many fish over twice her size who venture too close, she is also a big
fan of m&ms but doesnt like protein bars, apparently she has a complex about
her muscular shoulders! We have tried to capture her on camera on a few
occasions but she is unfortunately too fast for us, its tempting to jump over
and try to take a picture but hulio is afraid that she will kick his ass.
Well we are glad to have her here, my bet is
that due to the amount of food we throw her she will be on the atkins diet
before we reach antigua. you know what women are like!
just briefly a dory is actually a type of fishing
boat (not sure if thats the correct spelling of it), Chay Blyth and John Rideway
actually rowed across the Atlantic in one during the 60's. that really puts into
perspective what we are doing, their boat was fixed seat, they had to carry
all of their water and had tinned food, also they had no cabin and so to sleep
would crawl under some tarpaulin at one end of the boat. that is hard in a way
that i can not even imagine! chay blyth went on to organise the first ever
atlantic rowing race.
well how is it today. the wind has picked up but we
are still moving quite slowly, it seems to be increasing so fingers crossed we
might actually get some good weather for the first time. we predict getting to
antigua in around 3 weeks from now, so hopefully i will be back in the uk just
in time for the start of the six nations rugby! anything can happen though as we
now well know, with such little time left we are determined to enjoy every day
and appreciate this once in a lifetime opportunity.
hi to everyone back home, i hope you are all
well and will be seeing you very soon.
oh a quick thankyou to those of you who pinted out
juan's spelling errors. he was gutted and insists its the keyboard!
all the best
james
