Photo Journal of our side trips in the Canaries

A
Side Trip to Tenerife and Fuerteventura – by Ferry We decided to visit two of the other Canary Islands by
Ferry, so Murphy stayed at her Kennel up in the mountains where she had made friends and off we went. Our first stop was Tenerife, the largest of the islands which
has slightly more people than Gran Canaria. Most live on the coast because
the center of the island is mountainous, with the highest peak in
all Spain, Mt Teide at its center. On clear days you can see the top of
this volcanic peak but we did not have clear weather as you can
see from these pictures. In contrast to Grand Canaria, the land of
Tenerife slopes more with farms or fincas dotting the
landscape. Their biggest crop is bananas. We had quite a view from our hotel room, was quite
stunning, in the first picture we can see a barranca which is essentially for
drainage when rains run off the mountain. A flock of chickens
live here and the roosters were happy to start crowing about 4:30 am! We stayed on the north coast in a city called Puerto de la Cruz.
It was a very touristy city, but also very old. This man was fishing down at the harbor, you can see the
fish he caught in the pool behind him. Again we toured the island, the south coast was much drier
than the north. After Tenerife we went to Fuerteventura (means Strong
Winds), Fuerteventura is as big as Tenerife but only 75K live on this island. You can see how bare it is: We stayed at an all inclusive resort with three meals a
day. It was a great luxury after living on the boat. One day we saw
this goat in the grounds.
Behind the hotel was a small mountain – very small,
but it was fun to climb and see the view. There was this stick at the top
in a pile of rocks. You got a great view down to the beach. The interior of the island is very dry and moonlike This little town up high was very pretty. It had this very interesting fitness course, which I
understand is all the rage. When we crossed the Atlantic 10 years ago we left from
Fuerteventura, we made a visit back to the marina we left from. It is called Puerto Castillo. At the time it was a
small resort, it Is now a huge resort!
