Colon & Panama

By the 19h of January we're in the Colon anchorage, starting to provision the boat in earnest. We survived Colon City, thank goodness for that ! Not a nice place at all. The Lonely Planet guide says "prepared to be mugged" ......the city is facing 55 % unemployment, and we noticed the lack of ships transiting the canal of late, due to the economic climate.
We transited the canal on the 26th and 27th Jan, staying overnight in the Gatun Lake. Everything went smoothly, and it is a spectacular feat of engineering, well worth the experience. Woke up to the roar of the howler monkeys, and many different types of birds, including toucans.
Really a great feeling to be in the Pacific at last.
This side is a crowded and rolly anchorage, so we work hard getting ready to leave, shopping furiously and doing all those last minute jobs. The waterline now is below the water, just a bit, so we're off to the Las Perlas Islands in the next blog........
