Still trundling along under the engine, though only at 5 knots or so to conserve fuel. There is virtually no wind just a huge expanse of calm sea all around and a very warm sun. We were joined by a small family of dolphins early the morning. They were heading south west, took time out for a couple of turns round the boat, played in the bow wave for a minute or so and then turned back on their course, wheeling away into the distance. Gas is a bit tight, so rationing’s been introduced and cold grub is on the menu – not a great hardship in this weather. This morning has passed grappling with the arts of the sextant. The calculations, corrections, increments and so on are devilish and brains were under severe pressure. Still, sun sights were taken, a sun position worked out and then, surprisingly, an accurate latitude from the meridian passage shot at noon, so it was all worth it.

Yesterday, the engine was stopped for routine checks and refuelling and the opportunity taken for a dip in the large surrounding pool. It was very refreshing, and incredibly clear though not possible to touch the bottom or sides (some 4000m deep here) - also managed to dodge any sharks and the large jelly fish that occasionally sail by.

Knot of the day: Noose (invented shortly after the sextant) Nautical saying: Jaw
