Left Cala de Medici under a bright and sunny sky but with a gentle south wind with a swell rolling in from the west.

We arrived at the very large, and normally busy, port of Livorno just after mid-day and were pleased to discover no ship movements to distract us.  The entrances are very well marked and it was very easy to find the Yacht Club of Livorno, which is tucked in behind the old sea wall out of the way of larger boats, but would there be space for us?  After circling for a few minutes and having no luck calling them on the radio, we caught the attention of one of the club staff who directed us into an empty space. We have booked in for ‘one night’ but with an option on ‘three more nights’.  It all depends upon the weather; the current forecast is for increased winds and very lumpy seas for the next three days!

Tomorrow, we are going to explore if it is possible to leave the boat here for three or four weeks.  If so, we will abandon our plan to travel on to Genoa where we were going to leave the boat and fly home for the month of August.  If we can find somewhere secure for the boat locally, we can investigate flights home from Pisa – only a short bus or train ride from here – sometime later this week.
