After staying a second night in Portoferraio, we decide to venture out and explore the west end of the island.  Coming out of the port and rounding the north-east tip of the island, we had to be very careful to keep out of the way of the regular ferry service between the island port and Piombino on the mainland.  We managed that and found a small pretty bay in which we anchored for the night. 

Unfortunately it was most uncomfortable; although a reasonable wind from the north-east kept us pointing that way, the rollers were coming directly from the east (we don’t understand why or how) and were hitting us side-on and meant we spent most of the night pitching and rolling – as well as worrying if our anchor was holding!  It did and when we awoke early the next morning the wind and waves had both subsided and it was a beautiful morning for a swim.
