After five days of socialising, sight-seeing and a bit of boat maintenance, we finally left Baiona on 13th June for the 50 (nautical) mile trip south to our first port in Portugal, Povoa de Varzim.  Milling around before the start we were in 4kts of breeze and could see more outside the bay, so we opted to motor for the first few hundred yards.  We thought the small penalty would be worth it but we were the only one motoring!  The wind built rapidly and shortly after we rolled the jib out and started sailing we were overhauled by the fastest yacht in the fleet.  After clearing the rocks we turned south and retook the lead as we hoisted the gennaker first.  The wind slowly built to gusts of 22kts, at which point Jane told me I had to trade the gennaker for my lunch!  OK, I was hungry by then, so down it came.  We were still second across the finish line and were then entertained by the berthing antics of the rest of the fleet in challenging conditions.  Another lovely day’s sailing.
