Day 31 - More Catches

Clearlake II

Current position "15:46.7N 51:09.3W”. Apparently Friday’s marlin catch was, more specifically, an Atlantic Spearfish and, apparently, quite rare so was a good call to put him back [thanks for info Scott]. We’ve been making good progress since, although this morning the heat was sweltering. Byron and Graham both had to go to the stern to get buckets of water to throw over ourselves to keep cool, and we put the bimini back up for more shade.

Yesterday we ran out of wind towards the end of the day, so experimented with more sail – adding the cruising chute to a goose-winged genoa and mainsail. See pic. Not exactly in the boat designer’s mind, but gave us an extra 0.5 knots even if not very much flexibility in where to point relative to the wind!

In absence of more to do we put out the lures and, sure enough, we got another bite. Graham reeled it in but felt sure that whatever was there had gone as there was no load on the reel – see what we landed: a nice Wahoo (see pic) – quite a decent size but, after the marlin, it felt like nothing was there! So so far we’ve landed Tuna, Dorado, Marlin, and now Wahoo. Not bad! Byron’s been a big help to Graham for whom this is new stuff – today’s lesson was fileting. So, once again, tonight’s planned meal gets demoted. As it was it was fish pie, but that’s gone back in the fridge and it will be Wahoo filets instead!

Finally you get a pic of Graham doing his sun sight this afternoon – so get the measurements and then down for 30 mins of calculations and plotting...

As we look now we’re 590 nm from our destination – it’s reducing frighteningly fast. ETA is now Thursday morning, but we expect that to shift backwards as we hit calms on Tuesday and Wednesday....
