We spend 24 hours in Galle, Sri Lanka. All
the research we did before about Galle was not always accurate. Yes,
we did moor next to a concrete wall but there was hardly any tide and with six
fenders and three mooring lines we were fine. Our agent was brilliant!
Everything was delivered to the boat on the time they said they would and the
quality was prefectly normal. They even arranged a driver and car to take
us where we wanted to go free of charge. Bribes are common and everyone asked
even the security staff in the port. For a few beers we had someone looking
after the boat while we were away. The town is small and there are a lot of
dogs and crows! The people are really friendly.
We have developed a problem on the
starboard gearbox. When going forward it does not want to engage. It seems
the cable is going and we do not have a spare. We will get it replaced in
Malaysia. The watermaker still does not work and it seems that it needs to go
back to the factory for repairs. There are also a leak on the emergency
escape hatches in the aft cabins. Nothing serious but the rubber seals need
replacing. There is always something that needs repairing.
We are having a great time out here. It is
really worth taking time out from my career to do a trip like this. When I
sailed before you would go weeks without seeing any garbage. The fishing
was much better then. Now, you can hardly go a mile without seeing garbage!

Fish on! As we left Galle harbour I
hooked a Giant Trevaly. Only 5kg but it was a good fight. Delicous BBQ and we
will have fish cakes tomorrow with the left overs. Just before dark, I hooked a
Bonito (2kg) and it was no fight at all. It was released to grow
bigger.
