Our stop off on the way past St VIncent is
Wallilabou Bay, the location for the film of Pirates of the Caribbean. It
is quite a pretty spot with a hotel (of sorts!) which has moorings. We were
helped with our lines by the obligatory boat boy (20EC$) who did a good job. The
rock arch at the northern end of the bay is where the pirates were hanging from
if you've ever seen the film! The hotel and beach have several artefacts
remaining including the coffins, the mast from the Black Pearl, a couple of
structures from the film set (which look pretty awful now and as though they are
just about to fall down) and the usual signed photo board from the actors
and film crew. Unfortunately Johnny is long gone.......
We had a wander round and over to Keartons Bay to
the south in the afternoon to find the Little Rock Cafe referred to in our guide
book as a 'tiny garden oasis' - a very apt description as it turned out. We had
a drink with the owners, Orlando and Rosie - very welcoming nice people- in
their lovely garden. They also have moorings and do dinner.
The moorings back in Wallilabou are free if
you have dinner in the hotel. They also provide security and keep many of the
boat boys (who are prolific here and can be quite aggressive) away. A couple of
the bays along this stretch of coast have had problems with some armed robberies
on yachts in recent years and the locals are desperately keen to continue to
attract sailors and tourists. The hotel itself is basic and a bit run down, the
food fairly simple but nice. We had a candlelit supper by default as the power
went down early on in the evening - fortunately they cook on gas! The rum
punches were lethal!
