Currently en route from Povoa to Nazare. ETA
Nazare around 4am.
Our newly increased crew of five plus Jake from
Libertad decided to head off on a visit to Porto yesterday via the new Metro
link from Povoa. Having left the Richards brothers (combined IQ alleged to
be considerable)to successfully negotiate the automatic ticket machine (or so we
thought!) we were asked to leave the tram at Varielza by a friendly Portugese
ticket inspector -apparently we had bought tickets for 6 journeys for one person
rather than one journey for six people. 20 minutes later with the correct
tickets and on the next tram we were once again on our way.......
Porto was well worth the visit. We had lunch at
a very nice restaurant in the main square, chosen on the basis of the
captain urgently needing the heads rather than any 'Good Restaurant Guide'
- it was very good though! We then made our way down to the waterfront
which was quite spectacular and had a pleasant time looking around. Our
intention was to get on the Sanderson 'Port Museum Tour' complete with port
tasting but this was fully booked and we had to settle for beer/sangria at
a bar outside instead followed by a walk up from the town and back across
the tram bridge which gave us some amazing views. The weather was fantastic at
last - very hot and sunny. Andrew, who spends a lot of time in Val da Lobo in
the South, was heard to say over dinner later 'It never rains in
Portugal'. This has to be the quote of the trip so far as around 5am the
heavens opened and what appeared to be the equivalent of the UK's annual
rainfall fell in the space of the next five hours!
Next instalment of the Ula saga hopefully from
Nazare
