Spartan life

SPALAX

Living conditions on the Spalax are spartan. The fridge is turned off permanently (yes, we dring warm beer). The engine is run only to charge the batteries for navigation lights and satellite communication. Dirty dishes are washed in two buckets of salt water in the cockpit. Fresh water is used only for cooking and drinking. Morning ablutions are done from a plastic bottle (of fresh water). Showers are in the form of buckets of the Atlantic Ocean dumped over one's head while sitting or kneeling on the cockpit floor. Life on the Spalax may be spartan, but we eat like emperors: fresh tuna en papillotte, crepes suzettes a la confiture, chicken medallions aux champignons et sauce creme.

Yesterday we celebrated the passage of the mid-way point with rum punch and mashed potatoes and ham stakes in egg batter. The mood is really upbeat, and everyone is enjoying the warm sunny weather. The easterly wind of 18 knots persists, but the seas have calmed down and the Spalax is no longer rodeoing on the choppy seas but is gently being rocked by the longer Atlantic swell.
