23 May - Road trip around North Bimini
We went ashore in the dinghy to clear in at the Customs House which part of the Bimini Big Game Club. Having read that the Bahamas have strict rules about not bringing in any fresh food, we were expecting someone would want to come to the boat and check – turned out they just wanted the $300!
Once legal, we set off for a cycle around through the three towns that make up North Bimini - Alice Town, Bailey Town and Porgy Bay – they merge together and are each about half a mile long but people we met described them as very distinct.
We also found Spooky Hill Cemetery, the ferry terminal linking the north and south islands, and turned round when instructed!
Then, time for lunch at the Bimini Big Game Club – ‘World Famous’ for its long history (opened in 1947) and famous patrons such as Hemingway and Martin Luther King. Game fishing is obviously huge here. The deep waters of the Gulf Stream giving the many fish murderers plenty of large creatures to murder.
Whilst we were eating we were invited to join the locals in a Cultural Exchange Tea Party they were holding that afternoon on the ‘Big Lawn’. It turned out to be a mix of tourists and locals sitting at large round tables watching a fashion show and eating complementary local food and rum punch of course.
