The 'Young' Man and the Sea

Today as got to be all about Aston and his amazing catch. That is in the absence of a street party because some old lady has had the same job in 60 years, anyway the Queen God Bless Her!

We awoke, the night had been interesting as there had been an unexpeced partial eclipse of the moon, it struck me that back in London we would never ever have known about this let alone see it..as it was nearly a full moon and a clear night it was a beautiful sight. The waves sparkeld in the moon light and with an increasing wind everything felt alive and wonderful.

At dawn we witnessed an incredible phenomenon (forgive me there is no spell check on ths program!!) milions of flying fish rising from the waves in shoals of thousands escaping large tuna fish which jumped out of the water behind them..I felt lucky coming up from below to see the first tuna jump, but the 'show' lasted nearly an hour by which time I had got Atlanta and Aston on deck to see it.

Despite promising ourselves not to fish anymore I saw this as Aston's big chance at a fish of his own and so alone he set the line and rod. Fish started biting immediately and he was still holding the rod when the big one took...it took two of us to hold it at 8 knots and we had to slow the boat down before we could even raise the end of the rod. The fight took half an hour...boy against fish..I supported by holding the end of the rod into the fighting belt as Aston was in danger of being impaled with the force..imagine that.....the fish winning..unthinkable.

Eventually the body of the tuna was visible..HUGE!! It was a major event to get it on board and it filled the cockpit. The young man now had to fulfill his right of passage as a newly qualified teenager and clean and gut the beautiful fish. This took a couple of hours and by the end the cockpit looked like a massacre had taken place in it. Half an hour more to wash down and our lovely son proudly stood with many many pounds of lean tuna meat...that is definitely the end of fishing for a long time.

WE all felt nauseous, including Aston and no one fancied fish, not even sushi all day!!!

The other personal news was a sun-noon-sun fix that was dead on..well under a mile from actual position..my best ever, who needs those new fangled chart plotters (except to check that you are correct...oh and if it is cloudy!).

So lots of personal triumphs today and rounded off with falufel and humus.........'to our ships at sea and the Queen, God Bless Her.......and happy Jubilee'
