We came across Skjalfandi after a morning of
shopping and sorting.
It was a quiet sail across and down the
coast.
There were no whales but several whale watching
boats visible.
If they had been together we would have thought we
were in the wrong place.
Perhaps we were. But the scenery was
good.
Later we were passing Flatey Island - it is flat -
the opposite of all the shores around.
The book say "an abandoned island with about 30
summer cottages, community hall, church and lighthouse. Meadow hay and
wild flowers. Highly recommended".
The conditions are settled, as required, so we came
in. .
![]() It was worth visiting, the puffins swam about in
groups like the ducks. All the birds seemed to be nesting there, the
terns, puffins and various waders indignant at our visit.
![]() They are not as tame as the ducks, but swim
around not far away.
Are these a substitute for the whales?
The whale watching boats do advertise as "whale & puffin
watching"
![]() ![]() The other birds included terns in attack mode and
snipe drumming again, morning and evening.
The books both say "at dusk" so they must get
muddled this far north by the lack of dusk.
