Bernie’s Blog - Day 19 – Wednesday 8th June 2011

At time of writing we have 10 miles to go to Horta on the Azorean island o Faial. So we should be tucked up in harbour by lunchtime. Some of you may already have received our phone calls or texts before you get to read this. If you wish to find out more about our destination, Google ‘Horta’ and ‘Faial’. The Sweepstake winner is going to be P2 (Peter Stonestreet) and we will each give him £10 or 12Euros which we hope he will spend wisely on us!

Yesterday (Tuesday) turned out to be a fine sunny afternoon and the asymmetric spinnaker was flown until nightfall. We had made contact with the French yacht ALTAIR – first seen on 30th May – and she is 13 miles ahead. The only other yacht seen in the entire 19 days at sea. The ocean can be a big lonely place.

To celebrate our last night at sea we ate Rod’s excellent ‘all day breakfast’ Every utensil and gas ring, grill and oven was used. Bacon (from UK!), scrambled egg, tomatoes, mushrooms, baked A fitting end to some fantastic catering by a crew that claimed little cooking prowess (except our Skipper) before our voyage.

Plans for after arrival, having counted our fingers, include: an arrival drink/s, laundromat, clean ship, travel agents, Café Peter’s Sports this evening (Google that).

This has been a most successful and fun voyage. We have eaten very well, had lots of laughs and most of all get along like ‘a well oiled machine’.

And finally, a note that our skipper placed in the log before our Atlantic crossing in 2010:

“Many will have made this voyage before us;

 Many will make this voyage after us;

 But most people in the world will never experience what we have.

This is our special voyage.”
