Bernie’s Blog - Day 16 – Sunday 5 June 2011

Today is not very nice. Wet windy and ‘lumpy’. We don’t wish you were here; we wish we were with you!

Yesterday’s bread making was not a success. I placed the kneaded mix in a warm place to rise but nought happened. Not to be defeated I baked what there was and still no rise but 10 little plops of rock hard substance. But we don’t like waste so we sliced the unrisen ‘plops’, toasted them and ate with pate and cheese. Fortnum and Mason (or Crebers if you live in West Devon) might have put them in a fancy package’ given them a name of traditional Navy ‘Hard Tack’ and sold them for £10 a pack!  We are guessing that having followed the instructions to the letter that the Sainsbury bread mix was at fault. Its use by date was June 2011 but had been onboard for 18 months. We’ll have another go when the weather improves.

This morning’s crew discussion have covered commercial banking, syndicated loans and ‘work outs’. Colin led the subject; Peter (P1) understood; and the rest of us listened intently!

Last evening’s supper was the ‘famous’ Navy snack of ‘Cheesy, hammy, eggy’ followed by tinned peaches and evaporated milk.

Today we advanced our clocks one more hour to GMT –2 hrs; which places us on same time zone Azores; two hours after UK and 6 hours ahead of Vancouver.

Distance to go is about 460 miles so a Thursday arrival is looking more likely with Colin, Rod and Bernie in with chance to win the sweepstake.
