Friday 29th August. We have arrived in Mahon after a 32 hour passage from Alghero. The good news was that it was sunny all the way, except when it was night. The forecast gave us to believe that the seas would be calm and the wind would be on our beam. The reality was that for the first day and part of the night we were headed by the winds and the sea state was reminiscent of a Solent chop when strong winds are against tide. As Alison said: people pay a fortune to sit on medicine balls in gyms to strengthen their core muscles and we have that on tap for hours at a time. After about 3:00 am the seas calmed down and became mirror flat and we had a sunrise to match the previous sunset, wonderful colours and no clouds on the horizon to spoil the view.
We came into Mahon because we wanted to top up our Vodafone Spain SIM card to put into our router. The first shock was that we couldn’t anchor anywhere. The second shock was that it cost us €83 for the night in the most remote marina in the entire port. The third disappointment was that the Vodafone SIM card didn’t work with our ‘unlocked’ router and Spanish prices for data are eight times (!) that of Italy. We resolved that we would take the equipment away and research the problem, so asked the lady in the Vodafone shop when she would be open to. She replied that she would be there until 8:00 pm. When we returned 5 minutes ahead of that time (bearing in mind that she hadn’t re-opened after lunch until 5:00 pm, we found the place locked and in darkness.
Some of the above explains why the blog entries appear grouped together.
If you are able to read this, we have managed to find a way around the problem.
We intend to move on to Mallorca tomorrow, as a Tramontama is forecast very soon and can go on and on.
