Tuesday 24th June.  La Maddalena.  We returned to the marina as the various weather forecasts seemed to agree that some strong winds were on their way. However, as it was St John’s Day, we had the pleasure of much bell ringing and an outdoor service which culminated with the priests boarding one of the Guardia Costiera’s boats and doing a circuit of the marina, dispensing holy water and blessings. Unfortunately, the next day the anticipated winds arrived and no-one left the marina, including the fishing boats.
Whilst a nice tradition this was quite mooted compared with others in the Mediterranean on this day - whole fleets dressed up in some places, equestrian tournaments in others, and processions in many more.
