We left Calpe on Wednesday 30th September for a reasonably short hop around the Cabo de la Nao and the Cabo de San Antonio to Denia. We sailed for the first half hour and then the wind died and we when we rounded the Cabo de la Nao it strengthened but was on the nose - so another motoring trip.

We arrived in Denia at 2.00 pm but had spent the previous 2 hours watching clouds building ahead of us, some very ominous anvil shaped ones amongst them. No sooner had we tied up the rain started and pelted down for the next hour - with the benefit that we didn't need to wash the boat down. Once the rain had finished we explored Denia and climbed to the top of the castle. We remarked that for a sailing trip we seemed to be doing quite a lot of climbing!

Denia's new marina is of excellent quality and its individual bathroom facilities are the best that we have come across. Obviously they are seeking to keep it that way by having a 30 euro deposit for the access swipe card.

The following morning we left for Valencia and despite the forecast for showers had a pleasant sunny passage, albeit the wind was from the NW, the very direction of our journey - so another motoring experience. The scenery was absolutely splendid with a mountainous backdrop to ribbon development along the coast. The recent storms had had the result that the sea was littered with floating piles of sticks, literally for miles, and hand steering was required to miss the worst of them. We wondered where all these sticks, mostly bamboo, had been stacked for such large tonnages to have been washed away by the storms. Also prevalent in huge numbers were jelly fish - a feature that has been with us since we entered the Mediterranean but no so obvious when the seas were choppy.
