It's just gone midnight - early Friday morning. I
left the anchorage at Praia in Santiago yesterday morning with the bow pointing
roughly towards the Casamance River in Senegal.
On Wednesday night, I threw the dice myself giving
it just three choices. A 1 or 2 would have been The Gambia, 3 or 4 was for
Senegal and 5 or 6 would have been directly to Ascension Island. The dice landed
unceremoniously on a three and to be honest, I'm pleased not just to be leaving
Praia but I think the Casamance was probably my favourite of the three options
anyway. There has been some trouble in Ziguinchor and I may have to go there
briefly for the customs formalities and to provision for the next leg but I've
read some very positive things about cruising in the region. It sounds
absolutely beautiful. With surprising efficiency, I was able to get an armful of
something that will stop me getting Yellow Fever and a prescription for Malaria
tablets. I'll write in more detail when I have arrived in Senegal but the speed
with which I was able to get dealt with at the medical centre was the only
complimentary thing I can think of about Praia - and even then I had to bribe
the doctor with 100 Escudos (1 Euro)! Incredible. It is a truly disgusting place
full of selfish, thieving, ignorant inbreds.
So, moving on...
I'm sailing upwind for the first time since leaving
the UK! The wind slackened about an hour ago but it's been pretty energetic
sailing since leaving Santiago. Cansata's doing well though although my
heart stops evey time she crashes into a wave with a rig-trembling thump! I've
got another couple of days of this though and I should arrive in the estuary
early on Monday morning.
So that's all for now. Oh, I saw some very odd
looking dolphins earlier - with blunt noses like small whales with dorsel fins!
I'm sure they were dolphins though - just ugly ones. Maybe something to do with
all the inbreeding going on around here!
More later
Have a great weekend
