Nearly there! We can see land ahead - oh what a
welconme sight that is! This has been one long rolly wet reach and we will
all be glad when it is over. Can't really complain about 15-22kts from the
NE, but it still makes for hard sailing with young kids when trying to sail
beam-on to the seas. Very damp in the cockpit - a few seas came in but it
is also very humid at night and you feel very clammy. Wearing oilie
bottoms and Slam jackets at night - it is still pretty cold.
Last night we felt quite sad with the
thoughts of our friends who have all headed 150M further West, to Tenerife, and
the thoughts that we might not meet up with them again. However, you never
know who you will meet next and I am looking forward to nosing into the bay and
harbour on Graciosa and seeing who is there. I suspect we will see somne
of our Dutch friends again in the Caribbean, where there will be many stories to
swap after the Atlantic. Plus, I am really looking forward to seeing the
Canaries having never been here - and seeing them from the sailors' perspective
as opposed to the landbased tourist viewpoint.
0900 24-hr run was 136M, all under sail with
the Aries doing a good job of steering us. Had 1 reef in main and 1 reef
in genoa for most of the way, doing 6kts. Managed to keep energy
consumption low and had some charge from the wind & solars so haven't had to
use the engine till this morning. Realised in yesterdays update it sounded
like the batteries were getting 18V of charge from the alternator - don't think
they are - they are showing 13.3V - but it is the aux terminal on the alternator that is giving out 18V.
Will investigate when we've arrived.
