Picked up mooring off the town of Alofi around
09:00 local time (GMT - 11 hours) as the heavens opened. We rapidly retired
below for bacon, sausage, beans and eggs, toast and coffee. All very
welcome after the voyage. Now it's just like any sailing weekend during
August in England!
Niue is the
world's smallest self-govering state but the people are New Zealand citizens and
most of them live there and the island is slowly becoming depopulated. The
population in 2001 was 1,788 with about 12,000 in New Zealand. The island
is an elevated atoll which looks like a two teared wedding cake and it's one of
the largest coral islands in the world at 259 square km. It boasts the
finest coastal limestone crevices and chasms in the South Pacific with water
dripping from the roofs to form stalagtites and stalagmites. We shall
certainly going exploring them.
