PENTECOST
At Bwatnapne we arrived
just in time to see the ferry come in - a seriously big event!
The shore was lined with
bags and bags of kava ready for sale in Port Vila.
Loading up looked hard
work - most of the bags weighed in at over 100kg.
Anna (Tom's sister)
joined us aboard Kokamo at the southern end of Pentecost
Our wet and wild truck
ride to visit the kastom village of Bunlap was a rather crazy
adventure.
The only one remaining
even remotely dry was Cheif Luc in his Disney Land poncho!
Luckily the sun came out
when we arrived. The village clings to a near
vertical hillside and is made up of lots of terraces and with steep paths
and slippery steps to get around.
Unfortunately the rain
returned with a vengence for our return journey!
AMBRYM
After a rather bumpy
sail from Pentecost we arrived at Ambrym, the island of magic renowned for its
tree fern carvings.
Our volcano climb took
us across desert like ash plains and along river beds with huge lumps of exposed
lava rock.
Shrouded in cloud as we
approach the crater rim of Mount Marum, just over 1000m.
Looking down into the
mouth of the volcano. We didn't quite manage to capture the 10 second gap in the
cloud but if you really concentrate you can just make out the orange glow of the
boiling lava. honest.
