It just keeps getting better!
As we awoke on Wednesday, August 15, all seemed fine....until we realized that we had dragged anchor about 200 feet and were 50 feet from the rocks! The night had been rough, but there was an "eye" to the storm developing in the morning which was expected to continue until early afternoon. So we pulled up the anchor and reset it 3 times before we were confident that it had taken a strong hold (we put out 150 feet of stainless steel chain with a depth below the keel of 4 feet...at 5 to 1 scope, we backed down hard to get the anchor to dig in). And then Amy said..."I need a pint and let's go eat in town". So off we went in our dinghy to the town in fairly benign conditions. We toured the old church and graveyard, the headed to Mary Ann's for a mid-afternoon meal. Remember this place was awarded "Seafood Chef of the year for all the UK for 2012" (Castletownshend population: 60). Fergus was there to greet us...AGAIN...and off we went into another fun round of "U.S. politics discussions" with a guy extraordinarily well read. The food was terrific! When we then got back to our dinghy, the winds and waves were now picking up considerably (the last pictures below). We went topside and taped or took down almost anything that created wind resistance, since the worst was due to hit tonight! And...nervously...we settled in! Mike |
