29th May, 2010 We rented a car to explore Huahine Island which is very beautiful. Visited a pearl farm in the lagoon and were taught how cultured pearls are made, sadly the pearls were being sold at London prices so not worth buying. Really regret not getting them in the Tuamotus Islands where they were nearer the wholesale price. We visited another sacred site where ancestors were sometimes sacrificed for the benefit of the community to appease the gods. The Unu are erected to represented the dead ancestors. Sailed across to Tahaa and Raiatea yesterday which took about two hours. Had friends from other yachts onboard for dinner last night, feeling a little slow this morning. Off to get bread in a minute with the other girls. Plan to spend quite a few days here exploring these islands which are stunning. Sadly many places closed due to the recession and lack of tourists. Lack of tourists great for us but not good for the economy here. ![]() ![]() ![]() Mooroe Bay, Huahine, Society Islands Driftwood bench at Pearl farm Shell decoration on house on stilts ![]() ![]() ![]() Traditional dug out canoe growing orchids on coconut husks Hibiscus flower Old dugout canoe, Huahine House on stilts Faie Bay Lagoon Unu representing spirits of dead ancestors ![]() ![]() ![]() Sacred site at Marae Donald outside Traditional Polnesian house Sacred giant eels in Faie Huahine Island
