Having exhausted Alan's enthusiasm for heads work, we
headed for Marin to see if we could find some chandlery and a berth from which
to explore the island. The approach is interesting, and there is plenty of
evidence of either the strength and ferocity of the weather, or the poor
anchoring techniques of some visitors! There are wrecked yachts on both sides of
the channel, high and dry on the many reefs that fill the bay.
As we approached the marina the bay opened out in front
of us and revealed an enormous number of yachts in the marina, on
moorings or at anchor. The marina - one of only two on the island -
has a capacity of 600 boats, and there must have been more than that
in the bay outside. Finding space to anchor looked hard, but there was
actually plenty of room for us, and we ended up close to the boat yard
and a landing dock which made going ashore easy. There was a handy supermarket
close by. The chandleries were also near the dock, so it worked out well. There
was no Yanmar engine oil to be found, sadly, but a suitable equivalent was
recommended (more dirty work for Alan!).
The marina had no berths for us, however, since they
were apparently full for the whole of February, so our plan to moor up and rent
a car for inland exploration had to be abandoned. It was also a bit murky close
to the town, and making water seemed unwise, so we decided to move on to the
anchorage south of the bay.
