We came into the lagoon through the French bridge (west side, Dutch bridge is east side) before the weekend, to have a couple of quiet nights at anchor, to have a meal out, to renew provisions and to get a haircut….but not necessarily in that order! Even in the lagoon, the wind was fairly lively and there was a solid chop running, but we managed to settle the boat in the lea of the “Witches Tit” – a mound that provided a bit of shelter.  We had a Dutch rather than a French haircut (the difference is what?), and found an allegedly American supermarket to refill the bilges with food and stuff.

The French side is centred round a pleasant little town, where you can walk freely without dodging the trucks, though there are the usual high end couture shops amongst the boulangeries and restaurants. The Dutch side is more like an American west coast city – no pavements worth talking about, shops and restaurants in development malls (often closed), with the single redeeming feature of a superb boulangerie that had obviously landed in the wrong place.

Planning to head for Anguilla soon, but the winds are zephyrs, so not sure when we might cast off. Then we will head for the BVI’s where we have a date with a sailmaker….
