Quick update to tell you about this pretty little village outside Funchal - Camara de Lobos!

We were in Funchal Marina for three nights then looking ahead at the weather and our plans to sail to Lanzarote at the end of the week, we decided we had to leave Madeira far sooner than we hoped.

Having been in touch with Insta friends Helen and Steve from Cerulean, we planned to leave Funchal Marina and join them for a night at anchor before sailing to Lanzarote together the next morning. The passage would take us two days and 300 nautical miles.

We arrived at Camara de Lobos just after lunch on Sunday 26th and were blown away by the sheer beauty of the place and the sheer cliff face we were anchored beneath!! As soon as we dropped our anchor we dived in the warm Atlantic water to cool off.

We then got in touch with Helen and Steve where were next to us in the anchorage and invited them over for drinks to discuss passage plans for the following morning - and watch the sun set …

The following morning we headed into Camara de Lobos which was a short tender trip round the headland into this very pretty little harbour! We were only able to spend a few hours there before we had to head back to Walkabout and prepare ourselves for the upcoming crossing to Lanza.

Our anchorage - beautiful huh?

Andrew also bumped into this chap. Anyone recognise him?
Apparently Winston Churchill visited Camara de Lobos on 8th January 1950.

Once back on Walkabout, a quick pack away of the tender, made a quick chilli for the crossing and lifted anchor with Helen and Steve and off we went to Lanza!

This is Cerulean as we left.

A few sunset and sunrise pictures along the route are always nice …

A close encounter with a slightly larger boat than us!! 0.4 of a mile away from us as it passed!!!

Our passage to Lanza was a mixed bag really!
It was windier and rougher than any wind forecast had predicted! But we decided (now that we are safely sheltered in the marina) that we would have crossed even knowing how windy it was going to be as the forecast is only getting winder and the sea state more lumpy!

Neither of us slept much on the two nights due to the windy conditions and the noise it makes when trying to sleep below decks. So tonight we will sleep well I’m sure. We met up with Helen and Steve earlier this afternoon for a de-brief which was fantastically useful! Lessons learned all round really and isn’t they what’s it all about?

One thing both of us asked each other was that fact that we have seen so little wildlife on this passage! No dolphins or whales?

Our next long passage will be THE ATLANTIC on 7th November!!! Now that is something to think about …. but for now, a few weeks here while Walkabout is lifted out the water for a change of anodes and coat of antifoul.

Until next time … xxx
