Here are some photos we have taken here in Vava'u -

This is the main harbour of Vava'u - there are a lot of boats here waiting for a weather window to head off to Fiji - they are still waiting 10 days later..

In the meantime there's always the Club. An establishment with a quirky style and a dinghy dock - magnet for all sailors - a bit of a cross between Ivan's and Foxy's 20 years ago. Some shots in town - trying to capture the all-black clothing look and the fact that there is electricity and backpackers here.

Darren looking very festive whilst almost everyone else is dressed in black - one of the sellers gave us the necklace and said whoever wears it is the boss - so we took it in turns very democratically.

Finally we get out to the islands - and it was a sunny/cloudy day, followed by a few really cloudy rainy days..

Beautiful view from the traditional picnic - we just needed a rake. There are 50 islands in this group - here are 5 of them.

Preparations for a traditional Tongan style feast - open air kitchen and homestyle food. Favourite dish - corned beef in coconut cream mmm.. oh, and the pork.

The never-ending quest for shells goes on and the collection is growing - good thing I threw all that stuff out at the beginning of the trip, Bill, more room for shells!

More beautiful view - that was the sunny day - and the search goes on....

The day after these pictures were taken was Sunday. It was heavy overcast with occasional rain. We had a lie-in and a lazy day, not even getting off the boat. The wind was going to change direction and we were already in a very protected place. To avoid any stress (we have had a bit lately in fact) we stayed put.

A good thing as Monday was constant rain and very poor visibility. The  very low cloud and rain prevented the DC-3 aeroplane I mentioned in an earlier blog from landing. I saw it fly over us very low (to get under the cloud) toward the airstrip. A few minutes later it came past again. It obviously hadn't landed. About 10 - 15 minutes past and it came past again. It was very very low and I saw it getting higher not lower as it neared the main island.  And later I realised that it had not gone past in the other direction when leaving as it usually does. I think the pilot could not see the strip and  went back to its original airport.

Tomorrow is predicted to be the same.
