Friday 25th August 2006 - Bora Bora

From Annie's Log..

Well, I really feel like I'm in Paradise now - we are in a lovely calm anchorage, there are no coral bombies, few boats, gorgeous views - life is good.
We are anchored in the lagoon of Bora Bora - one of the most beautiful islands in the world reputedly - on the south east side of the island. Bora Bora ia a pinnacle crested island surrounded by a reef which creates a beautiful lagoon around the perimeter of the island. It is 10 feet deep right here with a lovely sandy bottom and we just a little breeze so are blissfully still. The water is a beautiful crystalline aquamarine, and on one side we have the coconut fringed motu which forms part of the outside reef and on the other side is the island of Bora Bora dominated by a mighty twin pinnacle about 750m high - really a very nice spot at a very nice time. I wish I could just wiggle my nose and you would all be here for happy hour - you'd love it. I've sent a picture blog of the beautiful blues of this day - hope it turns out.

The reinforced tradewinds are around and we had them until Tuesday - it blew 15-25k solid for a week or so with bullets up to 28k. This just meant we had to be careful about where we were anchored and that the anchor was well dug in - in the lagoons everywhere is a lee shore. It's nice to have a rest from that for a while. Before we got here we had a few days in Tahaa - the sister island to Raiatea where we were hauled - it was nice but had deep anchorages (60 feet) and it was very windy when we were there. So it's lovely to find a bit of paradise here in perfect weather conditions.

We haven't spent much time on shore here apart from doing some provisioning. We have stocked up on our French favourites as it is the last we will see of them till Noumea if we get there. So we are brim full of cheese - camembert, brie etc and pate canned and fresh, saucisson and various meats. We found NZ lamb in the freezer section abd great cuts of beef, chicken etc. There's not much between here and Tonga provisionwise so we loaded up. Also got some fresh fruits and veges from local farmers so we should be good to go.

Well it's Monday now and the weather changed on Saturday and we have had on and off drizzly, gusty, overcast weather ever since. Now waiting for a nice window of reasonable weather to make our departure for points west. Not sure if we are heading for Suvarov or Penryn, it will depend on the wind angle, either way it's about 600 miles, then another 500-600 to Tonga. On the road again.
