The Big Island - Fatu Hiva

Here are some photos of our current island - we finally got to eat out at a restaurant which was a real treat after so many weeks at sea and in small anchorages with no amenities. We have been enjoying wandering around checking the place out and generally stretching our legs, practicing our extremely limited french 'bon jour, merci, deux bier s'il vous plait' etc. We also went on a day trip to see some anciet sacred sites, old ruins of villages and sacrificial altars where humans were sacrificed and eaten by the ancestors of the Marquesans - quite spooky but also very beautiful and peaceful.

Again you will have to work it out from the pictures and attach your own commentary - the book Darren is reading is Typee by Herman Melville which is set on Nuku Hiva and recounts his true story of living with the natives here in the 1800's. Nuku Hiva's other claim to fame is that the first series of "Survivor" was filmed here and apparently they turned the place upside down for the few months that they were here. All seems well now but the little No No Flies are voracious and leave a nasty itching bite for days - we've been lucky so far but others we've met are covered in bites ouch.
