La Gomera

We've just spent a few blustery days in the marina at Las Galletas.  Whilst the marina was very nice, the town was quite shabby and nothing to write home about.

We left the marina this morning in 20 odd knots of wind and headed back over to La Gomera.  Once again the wind was very changeable both in strength and direction.  En route we saw about 7 different groups of pilot whales, one group with 6 pilot whales in passed the boat on the starboard side no more than 25 feet away.  They stayed at the surface of the water as if to display their young calf off to us.

                                                                                Mother and calf just visible.

Once again John had his fishing rod out, he never gives up hope!  Today will go down in the annals of history for today he caught a bluefin tuna weighing approximately 5kg.  As the photos illustrate he looks like the cat who got the cream.  His sense of satisfaction even greater as I remarked that it was only a small fish when I first caught a glimpse of it (it must have been 30feet down at the time).  We'd been told about a quick method of dispatching them and so poured some gin (any spirit will do ) down it's gills, then stuck a knife through it's head.  Next time we'll save the gin and just use the knife.  The tuna is now beheaded, gutted and ready for the pan, no doubt John will have a cider to celebrate breaking his duck on the fish front (forgive the odd sounding metaphor).
