St Lucia

Rodney Bay marina exceeded our expectations. Though the pontoon berths are a bit rough, there is perfect shelter, and there are more facilities than we have seen to date. There is a cosy atmosphere around the dockside during the day and live music most evenings from one of the several restaurants and bars.

After stocking up, and to await Shropshire friends, Sue and Tim Kirk, we anchored in the bay off one of St Lucia`s best beach where we were "entertained" by jet-skiers who in characteristic noisy, delinquent and tormenting fashion weaved amongst anchored yachts, canoes, sailing dinghies and swimmers.. Such pleasure for the few at the expense of many could be equated with motor cycle joy riding across Hyde Park on a hot August weekend. It is a pity that St Lucia has not copied the Grenadines in banning these antisocial toys. It gave us enormous pleasure to see a rider summersault into mid air after she collided with our anchor chain.

The next three days with the Kirks were spent in glorious weather, gently cruising down the coast and bathing at anchor in delightful bays two of which were at the base of the dramatic vertiginous Pitons which ascend direct from the sea to almost 800 metres. On return to Rodney Bay the Kirks proceeded to their smart hotel which will now seem so much more luxurious, and we await arrival of the Panks and Sally Utley to accompany us towards Antigua via Martinique, Dominica, and Guadeloupe.
