Saint Vincent

Ernestina

Lissa’s flight from the UK was delayed but she still managed to make it to Saint Vincent on the evening of the 23rd, albeit without her bag!

We met her at the airport and returned to Blue Lagoon Marina where Ernestina was tied-up.

The missing suitcase arrived safely the next day.

Amanda’s research suggested that one place we had to visit on Saint Vincent was Montreal Gardens, a space in the hills/jungle developed and cultivated over the last 20 years by a British Gardner, Tim Bourne.

Following a bout of negotiations with a taxi driver and sharing the ride with some others from the marina we had a very interesting drive up to Montreal.  The driver was very keen to discuss the politics of the island, including the corrupt Prime Minister and the state of the roads which we witnessed to be in a very poor condition.

Arriving at the gardens we were met by Tim Bourne who, admitting to be in a good mood that day, was happy to chat and show us around. (I suspect the fact that I was accompanied by Amanda and Clarissa improved his mood; he was an “interesting” individual.)

The place has clearly been cultivated, but at the same time retains a very natural feel and in places is like being in the jungle except for the footpaths and occasional shelters. It is a remarkable achievement for one man assisted by a few local helpers.

Returning to the marina we took the tender across to the tiny Young Island for Clarissa’s first swim in the lovely warm clear waters of the Caribbean.
